Summer has arrived and gardens across the nation are in full bloom. If your garden is still missing that certain something then why not consider adding a new addition to the landscape. The perfect addition to your garden could be a dream come true in the form of a gazebo. This is one diy project that could single-handedly transform your garden in a matter of weeks.
Step 1- The foundation: Determine the size and location in the garden for your gazebo. Create the hexagon shape for the gazebo by first marking out squares on the lawn area. Using the square pattern measured with equal lengths per side set up batten boards and connect twine at each corner of the square.
Step 2: Create the hexagon shape
Twine squares must be used to create the triangle just at the corners. Both outside lines must be equal distance. Use tape to mark each inside edge of the triangle to ensure accuracy. Once complete you should have four equal triangles inside the square. Next is the eight footings on the outside the will go at the ends of each triangle. The ninth footing will be placed at the center of the hexagon making it total.
Step 3: Outside Footing
Outside footings require 12-inch diameter cardboard tubes. At each end of the hexagon, you will need to dig a hole at each end of the hexagon and add 4 inches of gravel. The holes must be deep enough to fill with concrete forms appropriately 2 inches above the ground. Use soil to level the hole above the gravel then pour the concrete. Use a 16-inch diameter tube for the center footing. Ensure that the concrete form is 11 inches above the ground then fill the concrete. Next you will need to attach a bolt to the center of each of the nine footings.
Step 4: Posts and Joists The post are placed at each of the outside footings to anchors the structure. Next use a board to line up the top of the center footing with each of the outside footings. Then locate the center and secure it with an anchor using a washer and a nut. Next attach the posts to the anchors in each of the eight outside footings. The outside post will then be attach to the perimeter floor beans and floor joints. Measure all posts from the ground up then mark 20 1/2 inches. Next you will need to create an angle by chiseling away at the wood on the outside of each post. Then install hangar brackets on the outside of each post. This will later attach the 2x4s which will run from posts through to the center footing. These brackets are used to attach the post to the outer perimeter beams.
Step 5: Floor and Roof
Nail together all the floor joists that already meet in the center of the gazebo. Add the angled floor joists to connect from the perimeter beams to the center of the main joist. Angled joists will be held in place with brackets. First get each angled bracket in place then install the decking. Begin from the inside then work your way out. Create a small wooden octagon that will be placed in the center. Starting at the center, nail the angled pieces of wood to the top of each floor joist. Complete this process around the entire top until the end. Find the center of the top post then begin the roof via each post being attached with a 2x4. Use the 2x4 to run from the top of each post to the center then connect at the octagonal hub. Sometimes referred to as the king post, this hub should be 6 inches long and made of wood. This next step will require a helper as they will have to stand onto the ladder with you to support the two beams required to be nailed on opposite post. Connect the two beam in the middle and nail them to the king post. This process must be repeated until the beam connects to the king post from each post. Add the rafters next by nailing pieces of wood in a perimeter around the king post. Next add the shingles.
Step 7: Shingles and Lattice
Connect the post with a railing then add a lattice. The lattice must extend from the railing to the floor. If you require stairs that use a concrete foundation and wood to create the stairs. Stairs are of course optional.
